Guided Reading in Second Grade
Today's tip is a video of a teacher instructing her second grade Guided Reading group. Watch how she introduces the reading strategy, models for her students, and then expects them to try the strategy on their own. Also, notice how the teacher uses Post-Its and prompts students to be thinking how they will respond to writing at a later time.

Reading Comprehension Strategies
While reading through some of my online journals, I ran across a link to a list of before, during, and after reading strategies. It's been a while since we've reviewed them, so I thought it might help jog our memories about some of the strategies we've used in the past.

Using Google Drive in the Classroom
I ran across this article the other day and thought 4th grade teachers might be interested in the information, especially the article titled, "Don’t Let Google Drive Leave Tire Marks on Your Lesson Plans." How are your Chromebooks changing your lesson plans?

Close Reading Videos
This week I've been researching ways to talk about Close Reading. As teachers, we've been doing this for years, but Common Core has given us a reason to focus more intently on this in the classroom. Here are a couple of videos that show Close Reading in action. What does Close Reading look like in your classroom? Have you changed the intentionality of the way you teach this?

This week's tip is about whole-brain teaching and specifically for first grade teachers. (Although I've seen these strategies in K-4) Watch as the teacher in the video uses the "blow it in your hand" strategy and the "teach" strategy. How could this be implemented in your classroom? Is there a tidbit you can take take away with you? Let me know if you are trying this; I would love to see how our students respond. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaweXw03kQI
The Daily 5 and CAFE
CAFE Menu: Does It Include Behaviors? (ARTICLE)
Though behaviors are a critical part to Daily 5 success, the CAFE menu is composed solely of reading strategies that will help our students achieve their reading goals.
We talk about behaviors extensively as we launch Daily 5 using "I Charts". However, we do not place them on the Menu bulletin board. Behavior goals can be very personal, so we save them for our individual conferences with students. If a student has a behavior goal in addition to a reading goal, both goals are written on their conferring sheet and highlighted on the individual CAFE Menu that is located in their section of the Pensieve (you will see "Behaviors that Support Reading" printed on the bottom of the print version).
